Vaccinations in Cattery Viosna*PL

Today all the kittens from litter H were vaccinated! They were really brave or rather didn’t notice the injection at all 🙂 They were so busy eating their favorite sachet that thy missed the fact that they were just vaccinated. (It’s a trick called “Diversion” that I use to distract all my patients and it almost always work 😉 – update: you can see how we vaccinate on a movie HERE).

Vaccinations in Cattery Viosna*PL are made three times. First is done in 6 weeks old kittens because of immune gap. It means that antibodies that kittens got from their mom start do decrease and so is the kittens immunity. Vaccinating them helps to keep them healthy until we can do the vaccinations that will give them long-term immunity. Early vaccinating in 6th week is not obligatory and not doing it doesn’t mean that the kittens will get sick. But without it there is bigger chance that they can.

That is why we have 6th weeks vaccination a standard procedure in our cattery – because we care for our cats health. In litter H first vaccination used was Purevax RCP which helps to raise immunity against dangerous and mostly deadly disease called Feline Panleucopenia and also against Calicivirus and Rhinotracheitis. These last two are caused by Calicivirus and Herpesvirus that together are commonly known as a ‘cat flu’.

Vaccine Purevax RCPCh is given at age of 8-9 weeks and except above it also helps to protect against Chlamydophila felis that cause ex. conjunctivitis. But that’s not the last injection. When kittens are 12 weeks old they receive this vaccination for the second time so they can develop immunity that will last another year. Only kittens with this kind of protection can leave our cattery Viosna*PL

Kittens from litter H are already after the last vaccination in our cattery. Next vaccination needs to be done after a year from that. But that’s a New Owners duty to take care of it 😉

Here in the cattery the vaccinations were non noticable and with no problem at all. Guys were really brave and didn’t realized that it even took place. 

The only stress that came along with vaccinating was the one Helen had. Because she is going to stay as a breeding cat in our cattery Viosna*PL, her vaccination was a little different than the other cats. It contained also an antigen for Feline Leukemia. With this it is essential to do a diagnostic test first for FIV and FeLv (same one we do every year to all our cats in the cattery). Helen had to have blood sample collected and that was her stressful situation here. But she was polite as always so everything went fast and smooth. After few minutes she seemed to have forgotten that there was something going on. Test came negative of course for both diseases (which holds our cattery status to be free from FIV and FeLV). When it came to vaccination after doing the test, Helen haven’t even noticed it – same as the rest of her siblings 😉
