Illy’s eye surgery

Finally came the day for eye surgery of our little Illy. Since September Illy stays at her new home in Bydgoszcz and I see her occasionally at the clinic for regular prophylactic deworming. But this time we were suppose to spend together the entire day. In the morning Illy was a little bit unhappy – because she was hungry, but anyway she got in the car with us and traveled to Warsaw. According to previous agreements, she was going to have scheduled symblepharon surgery at 12:30 at Dr Garncarz Opthalmological clinic in Warsaw. We decided to get for Illy some professional help she needs so we turned to the best veterinary ophthalmologist we know. Reason causing Illys’ problem is given in her profile (here).

While going to Warsaw Illy spend some time sleeping on my lap or in her carrier. All the time spend out of her carrier she was wearing her harness and was on a leash. Thanks to that it was easier to watch over her and keep her from disturbing Tomek while driving. There was a litterbox in the trunk and  ski hole in it was open so she could use her toilet anytime she needs. But because every animal should be on an empty stomach before any sedation – she didn’t feel like using it at all.

At ophthalmology clinic of Dr Jacek Garncarz they were already waiting for us. For surgery Illy had to be completely sedated and agreement for using anesthetics was needed. Because since September Illy formally isn’t our cat anymore (but for us she will always be “our”) we had to agree everything with her actual owner who signed all documents needed when he left Illy with us for this trip.

Illy went trough everything very well. Anesthesiologist Dr Agnieszka Wiśniewska was pleased with how she had managed. Dr Garncarz also was satisfied with how the surgery went. First thing Illy did when she woke was to try to wash her eye with her front paw. Of course any washing like that or scratching is forbidden in her case. That’s why her owner will have to not only give special kinds of eye drops but also keep her to wear her collar.

 

For another two weeks Illy will be under my regular control and we have at least one more trip to Warsaw together – so healing progress can be checked in a professional ophthalmological exam.

This time all the way back Illy slept in her carrier on a warm thermofor and during the trip she used her litterbox once (probably after the drip she got with the surgery). For now Illy is unhappy only with her collar.
