Control tests for FIV and FeLV – 2014

Cattery Viosna*PL is free from dangerous diseases such as Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeiciency Virus (FIV).

Considering the conditions of living and our cats lifestyle, we don’t even suspect that they might have get sick for those diseases but we wanted to make sure and exclude those in 100%. Both diseases Feline Leukemia and FIV are impossible to cure and have great influence on cats immune system. Because we regullary check our cats, it was time to do it again.

FIV and FeLV test are done every year at least once, to make sure that our cats are healthy and didn’t have contact with any of these retroviruses. For Elmirka and Dziabąg it was also time for preventive vaccination and all our breeding and cattery cats are getting also vaccine for leukemia. Especially before the very first vaccination for leukemia it is recommended to make sure that this particular cat is negative for it before the innoculation.

Tests for FeLV can be done even with cats that already had been vaccinated for leukemia. Vaccinated cats produce specific antibodies responsible for fighting the virus. But reagents in the test don’t react to them. That’s why the test can be done for vaccinated cats. Test is suppose to find a specific antigen in the virus itself, to prove that it is there.

With FIV there are no vaccinations so if the cat has specific antibodies for this virus it means the cat had contact with it. Because the virus can become temporarily latent it can be impossible to find it in that period. That’s why the test reagents react with antibodies not with the virus. If there are no antibodies, the result is negative and cat is healthy.

Resuming – test reagents react with Feline Leukemia Virus and FIV antibodies.

For the test you need to collect a little blood sample and put it on a special tile with reagents. It looks like a typical test ex. for humans helicobacter or pregnancy test (only you use blood). Result comes after around 15 minutes and is showed by the “stipes” in a result window of the test.

There is place for 2 stripes to show up:

  • Control stripe (C) – it should show every time when the test is performed properly
  • Test stripe (T) – it shows only if the result is positive for FeLV virus/FIV antibodies.

With our Whisper, Elmirka and Dziabąd all the FIV and FeLV test

turned out negative for both diseases.
